Gervasi Vineyard Wins Platinum Medal

Gervasi Vineyard was awarded a Platinum Medal for their Sognata Ice Wine at the 2022 Great American International Wine Competition.

The competition was held April 23-24 in Rochester, NY, and a total of 1,200 entries from 195 wineries around the world were submitted. Expert judges included the most influential people in the wine industry, including Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers, sommeliers, educators, enologists, winemakers, retailers, importers and wine industry writers and consultants.

The Great American International Wine Competition is a charitable competition. Raise a Glass Foundation was created to help save and improve the lives of adults and children around the world. This year’s competition submissions supported Rotary’s Camp Haccamo and Sunshine Campus – summer residence camps for children with disabilities; and InterVol, a humanitarian group that recovers unused medical supplies and hospital equipment and ships them to countries in urgent need of assistance.

“I have been sending wine to the Great American International competition for several years now, and I always appreciate the caliber of their judges.” said David Smith, Head Winemaker at Gervasi Vineyard. “Our wines have a rich history and are very diverse to the palate. I am very pleased and honored with the competition’s results.”

Gervasi’s Sognata Ice Wine is a type of dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. The sugars and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does; allowing a more concentrated grape juice to be pressed from the frozen grapes. This results in a smaller amount of a more concentrated and richer wine. The wine is intense and sweet with aromas of honey, pear, apricot and tangerine.

Gervasi Vineyard produces a notable range of wines on site in their state-of-the-art winery. Gervasi strives to make their wines among the best, using grapes and juice from their own vineyards and hand-selected vineyards in Ohio and around the country.

Gervasi also received a silver medal for Fioretto (Sauvignon Blanc). Six bronze medals were awarded to Piove (Riesling), Brigante (Sweet Red Blend), Bellina (Chardonnay), Celebrazione (Blend of Merlot and Marquette), Romanza (Rosé), and Barile (Cabernet Sauvignon aged in Bourbon Barrels).

Gervasi wine is available to enjoy at all GV Destination restaurants and can be purchased to take home from The Still House, The Crush House, and The Marketplace Gift Shop.

“I couldn’t be more excited and prouder of our winery team. To receive a platinum medal for Sognata at our first wine competition of 2022 is a real testament to the outstanding work of our employees,” said Scott Swaldo, CEO/General Manager for GV Destinations.
