Finding a connection with consumers in any aspect now can be a challenge as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to pause normal life in America. Hosmer Winery is capitalizing on some positive reviews of three of its Rieslings recently by offering a Facebook Live tasting with winemaker Julia Hoyle set for May 8.
It will be a new experience for the Ovid, New York facility. Tasting Room Manager Kaitlynn Winkleblack says that she has seen a few wineries around do similar tastings and they seem to have decent turnouts.
“No one really has much to do these days except binge-watch TV and sit on their computers/phones, so this is a great way to connect our wine drinkers to us during this time,” she said.
The three wines planned to be taste-tested are the winery’s 2017 Limited Release Riesling; its 2018 Semi-Dry Riesling and a 2018 Dry Riesling. All three were given high marks in the June edition of Wine & Spirits under the “Year’s Best US Rieslings” section with the 2017 Limited Release scoring a 95.
“Last year our 2017 Late Pick Riesling scored 94 points in the same magazine,” Winkleblack said. “We sent an email to our list and sold over two cases of it at $35 per bottle.
“I always think of it as, if people were raving about something and saying how good it is you’d want to try it too, right?”
Hosmer will host the virtual tasting at 4:30 p.m. (EST) Friday, May 8 on its Facebook page.
The winery is offering a tasting bundle of the three wines on its website along with in-person at the tasting room.
“We will be tasting through the three wines,” Winkleblack explained. “Julia will discuss the winemaking process and people can ask questions that we can answer on the spot. We’ll then probably talk about some food pairings, tasting notes, and see how the video goes and how our consumers interact with us.”
The Riesling vines on the Hosmer farm, known as Patrician Verona Vineyard, are upwards of 40 years old. With almost 16 out of their 70 acres making up Riesling, Hosmer Winery produces anywhere from six to eight different styles of Riesling ranging from bone-dry to semi-sweet, to sparkling.
